MIRAGGIO EUROPA
Lorenzo Di Pietro

CONTACT presents MIRAGGIO EUROPA, a photographic reportage made in 2010 by investigative journalist Lorenzo Di Pietro along migration routes crossing Niger and the Sahara towards Libya and the Mediterranean.
More than fifteen years later, the project is presented as testimony to a condition that remains current: exploitation, violence and inequality persist. Its title comes from a real mirage caused by heat refraction and seen by migrants in the desert; it becomes a metaphor for Europe imagined as salvation, continually deferred, distorted or denied.
The sequence follows the journey from African urban peripheries to Agadez and across Saharan routes, documenting ghettos, extortion, trafficking, desert crossings, detention, torture, returns and further departures. Made in January 2010, when Niger’s government had barred journalists and photographers from a region marked by the aftermath of Tuareg conflict, the reportage attends to journey, waiting, violence, hope and resilience.
